I have a large collection of Observer Books, with a few duplicates. I've used some of these duplicates to start a little series of paintings which is proving very popular with collectors!
The battered book cover is a lovely surface to paint on, and takes the paint really well.
Whilst a Wood Sandpiper is generally a bird whose habitat is freshwater bodies of water I have seen them wading along marshy coastlines so I have taken artistic license as they are lovely little birds and a pleasure to paint! This book cover has actually had two artists work on it. At some stage there has been a little damage to the top right hand corner, maybe from the removal of a price sticker? A previous owner has done a lovely job in filling in the word book with red paint. It's little things like this that intrigue me and adds to the joy of working with vintage ephemera!
I have mounted the book flat onto an 3mm A4 stained wooden panel and framed it in a white stained wooden box frame.
