Hinterland

Hinterland - Literally translated (from the German origins) as the land behind; this can be used to describe land "behind" the coast. I find the most interesting areas of coastal land are those where the inland or hinterland meets the cliffs, or beach. Farmers' fields transitioning into sand dunes or wooded outcrops abrubtly stopped by a plunging cliff.
