Layers Of Time
Layers Of Time
Layers of Time draws upon an enduring fascination with archaeology, geology, and the traces of human presence embedded within the landscape. Constructed through layers of hand-painted and hand-printed repurposed ephemera, collage, acrylic paint, inks, and dry media, the work explores the accumulation of time through both material process and image.
The painting references geological strata, buried artefacts, standing stones, and ancient traces concealed beneath the surface of the land. Layered forms and fragmented markings suggest excavation and sedimentation, where histories are partially revealed, obscured, and preserved within the surface itself. The material construction of the work becomes analogous to archaeological process: fragments are embedded, uncovered, interrupted, and reconfigured through successive layers.
The use of repurposed printed materials introduces ideas of memory, erosion, and cultural residue, allowing the painting to function simultaneously as landscape and archive. Through texture, accumulation, and layered surfaces, the work reflects on the ways both natural and human histories are carried within the physical fabric of place.Lovingly created with lots of collage and mixed media. This is a lovely deep-sided box canvas. I have painted the sides white and left it unframed as it is beautiful as is.
